The RKD and Bonebakker Jewellers hold a charity auction in aid of the Bonebakker Archive
On Sunday 3 June the RKD is organising a charity auction in collaboration with Bonebakker Jewellers to raise funds for the Bonebakker Archive. The auction will start at 3.30 pm at the Conservatorium Hotel , 27 Van Baerlestraat, Amsterdam, which is also home to the Bonebakker Salon which opened recently.
In addition to a limited number of facsimiles of nineteenth-century presentation drawings of showpieces from the archive, there will be exclusive ‘packages’ donated by cultural institutions as well as shops on the P.C. Hooftstraat.
Bonebakker Jewellers has been an established Amsterdam institution for two centuries. As early as the nineteenth century the firm received numerous prestigious commissions culminating in a new crown for King Willem II, which he wore for his coronation on 28 November 1840. You can admire the drawing of this crown at the Bonebakker Salon in the Conservatorium Hotel.
The Bonebakker Archive occupies approximately 20 metres of floorspace. It covers the two-hundred year history of Amsterdam’s foremost purveyor of silver and jewellery and it is one of the most important international design archives for silver and jewellery held by the RKD. The archive contains a wealth of nineteenth and twentieth-century visual material illustrating all the areas in which the firm specialised, ranging from royal jewels and showpieces handcrafted for special occasions to industrially produced silverware.
A number of unique design drawings in the archive are in urgent need of special conservation treatment, such as deacidification and repair, in preparation for the digitisation of a large part of the ducumentation for use by researchers, exhibition curators, antique dealers and interested members of the public.
To raise the extra funding necessary to provide access to and preserve the Bonebakker Archive, the RKD has found a creative partner in Jannie Iwema, director of the new Bonebakker Salon, who is helping to organise the event. Max Hemelraad, the well-known auctioneer, has agreed to conduct the sale on 3 June and the Conservatorium Hotel has generously offered its premises for the occasion.
From 14 May all auction items will be illustrated online at: www.rkd.nl en www.bonebakker.nl; viewing is from 23 May to 2 June in the salon of Bonebakker Jewellers, daily (except Tuesdays) from 11 am to 7 pm.
