Art & Project Archive
Between 2001 and 2014 the entire archive of the Art & Project Gallery was transferred bit by bit to the RKD by its owners, Geert van Beijeren (1933-2005) and Adriaan van Ravesteijn (1938-2015). Art & Project was operational from September 1968 until December 2001 and was part of an international network of galleries in Europe
and the US. From its inception, the gallery showed artists who went on to become world famous such as Gilbert & George, Richard Long, Daniel Buren and Sol LeWitt. For twenty years the gallery was based in Amsterdam before relocating to the former community centre of the Jewish training camp Nieuwesluis in the village of Slootdorp, Noord-Holland.
Through their activities as gallery owners and collectors, Van Beijeren and Van Ravesteijn assembled a remarkable archive. Besides general correspondence with national and international museums, galleries and other art institutions, and the individual files for each artist with written and visual documentation, the archive includes draft material for the magazine issued by Art & Project, which often featured articles by artists. The RKD also holds a large number of artist's books as well as magazines collected by Van Beijeren and Van Ravesteijn.
A group of the artist's books has been catalogued in RKDlibrary and they can be seen by appointment. If you wish to consult the archive, please read the instructions in Collections & Archives.
